Welcome To The Casita

Released in 2021, Encanto is an animated film that was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard (under the banner of Walt Disney Animation Studios). The movie follows a Columbian family called the Madrigals, who are born with extraordinary abilities bestowed by a miracle. Alma Madrigal (María Cecilia Botero), the head of the family, discovered these powers after being repelled from her village during a bloody conflict. Her husband, Pedro, did not survive, but she and her children — Pepa (Carolina Gaitán), Julieta (Angie Cepeda), and Bruno (John Leguizamo) — escaped when a magical candle built the Casita, a sentient building, within a realm protected by large borders.

Many years after the founding of the Casita, the Madrigal family has expanded to include several new faces: Félix (Mauro Castillo), Luisa (Jessica Darrow), Isabela (Diane Guerrero), Agustín (Wilmer Valderrama), Camilo (Rhenzy Feliz), Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Dolores (Adassa), and Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). Mirabel — the 15-year-old protagonist of the film — is unlike the rest of her relatives, having no abilities to speak of. However, it falls to her to unravel the truth behind the sudden degradation of the Casita and the flickering of the candle. To do so, she must investigate Bruno, who disappeared a decade ago in the wake of being outcasted for his precognitive gifts, and come to terms with his prophecies of a divided future.

An immense success among filmgoers, Encanto captured imaginations with its unique premise and incredible soundtrack, which was composed by Germaine Franco. The song “Dos Oruguitas” received Academy Awards nominations for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
