The Rise Of The Giant Robots

Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in conjunction with Sunrise (a Japanese animation studio), Gundam is a mixed-media franchise that revolves around giant robots. It is considered a staple of the mecha anime genre, having incorporated the popular “mobile suits” in a militaristic context. Since the debut of the franchise, there have been various TV series, films, manga, novels, and video games.

Originally, the concept was introduced as an animated show titled Mobile Suit Gundam (1979–1980), which takes place in the Universal Century year 0079. The story of the series is predominantly driven by the One Year War, a large-scale conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality Of Zeon. Using mechanised weapons known as mobile suits, Zeon has managed to compete with the larger Federation, the consequence of their violence being the death of half of humanity.

Amuro Ray (voiced by Tōru Furuya and Brad Swaile), a mechanic stationed at a secret Federation research base on the Side 7 colony, is at the forefront of the narrative. When the base is besieged by Zeon forces, he uses a new prototype weapon, the RX-78 Gundam, to repel the attackers. The survivors — a collective of civilians and refugees — subsequently board a warship called the White Base and depart, attempting to survive. However, they are often under threat from Lieutenant Commander Char Aznable (Shūichi Ikeda and Michael Kopsa), who acts as the principal antagonist.
