Fish Are Friends

In 2003, theater audiences were treated to Pixar Animation Studios’s latest creation: Finding Nemo. Directed by Andrew Stanton, the film introduces Marlin (Albert Brooks), a clownfish who lost his wife and all but one of his children to a barracuda attack. Struck by grief but relieved that a small part of his world hadn’t been destroyed, he named the survivor Nemo (Alexander Gould). Many years after this tragic incident, Marlin and his son live together in an anemone located in the Great Barrier Reef, and it’s Nemo’s first day of school. Marlin has become extremely overprotective because of what happened in his past, causing Nemo to act out in defiance. This act, which involves Nemo attempting to touch a nearby speedboat, leads to the young clownfish being captured by scuba divers.

The rest of the film tracks Marlin’s journey to rescue his son — who has been transported to a fish tank in a dentist’s office, where he lives with Moorish idol Gil (Willem Dafoe), blowfish Bloat (Brad Garrett), royal gramma Gurgle (Austin Pendleton), and damselfish Deb (Vicki Lewis), yellow tang Bubbles (Stephen Root), starfish Peach (Allison Janney), and cleaner shrimp Jacques (Joe Ranft) — taking him all the way to Syndey. On his path, he encounters all manner of sea creatures, one of whom is the blue tang Dory (Ellen DeGeneres).

More than a decade after the original film’s debut, Finding Dory (2016) was released. This spin-off/sequel centres around its eponymous character, who is searching for her parents, having forgotten them as a result of her short-term memory. Unfortunately, she finds herself taken to the Marine Life Institute, a place home to octopus Hank (Ed O'Neill), whale shark Destiny (Kaitlin Olson), and beluga whale Bailey (Ty Burrell).
