There’s No Place Like Home

Written by author Lyman Frank Baum and illustrated by W.W. Denslow, The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (1900) is a classic children’s novel that transports readers to a fantasy land called Oz. The central protagonist, Dorothy, and her dog, Toto, are carried there after a tornado ravages their home in Kansas. They find themselves stranded in Munchkin Country, where their house has killed the Wicked Witch Of The East. To show gratitude, the Good Witch gifts her the Wicked Witch’s silver shoes and says that Dorothy must follow the yellow brick road to ask the Wizard Of Oz, who resides in the Emerald City, to return her home.

On Dorothy’s journey, the lost girl befriends a number of odd characters: the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. Each of them desires something from the Wizard — the Scarecrow, a brain; the Tin Woodman, a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, courage — so they decide to join her on the path to the Emerald City. However, when they arrive, the Wizard states that he will only grant their wishes if they defeat the Wicked Witch Of The West, a near-impossible feat.

Capitalising on the popularity of the book, American media company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released a live-action film adaptation in 1939, which was directed by Victor Fleming. The movie incorporates musical elements (created by Edgar “Yip” Harburg and Harold Arlen) and features Judy Garland in the starring role.
