The World’s Greatest Marksman

The man known as Hawkeye, Clinton Francis “Clint” Barton, was created by Stan Lee (writer) and Don Heck (artist). His first appearance in comic books was Tales Of Suspense #57 (1964), a story that explored the origins of this purple-clad archer.

Having suffered the loss of both their parents when they were young children, Clint and his older brother, Barney, joined the Carson Carnival Of Traveling Wonders. This was where the youngest of the Barton brothers learned how to become a proficient ranged fighter, his training facilitated by the Swordsman. Unfortunately, Clint made the discovery that his mentor was stealing money from the carnival, and he was severely assaulted when he attempted to report the crime. Despite this tragic event, he continued to hone his archery abilities, receiving his world-famous moniker by entertaining audiences at different circuses. His journey into the world of capes and tights truly began after he observed the super heroics of Iron Man (Tony Stark).

At first, Clint found himself on the wrong path, perceived to be a criminal following a misunderstanding. His villainous persona was later reinforced when he met Black Widow (Natasha Romanova), to whom he felt an instant romantic attachment. Working on behalf of the Soviet Union, Romanova started to steal technology owned by Stark, and Clint assisted her without question. It was only after his partner was badly wounded that he finally changed his ways, his skills used for the benefit of the Avengers.

On the big screen, Clint has played a large role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), in which he is portrayed by actor Jeremy Renner. This live-action iteration was unveiled in Thor (2011), cameoing as a bow-wielding S.H.I.E.L.D. agent overseeing the landing site of the God Of Thunder’s hammer, Mjolnir. After establishing himself as a core member of the original Avengers — the line-up of which also comprised Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) — he received his own Disney+ TV series. Said show served as the introduction for Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a young archer inspired by his heroics during the Battle Of New York.
