The Corleone Criminal Empire

Based on the best-selling 1969 novel by Mario Puzo, The Godfather (1972) is an American crime film that was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The story is set during the 1940s and ‘50s and centers around the Corleone crime family, which is led by Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). One day, Vito is approached by a drug baron called Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo (Al Lettieri), who asks that he accept an offer to invest in his business. When Vito refuses, his traditionalist values holding firm, Sollozzo — who is supported by the influential Tattaglia family — kidnaps his consigliere, Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall), and attempts to have him killed. By some stroke of luck, Vito survives the attempt, but he is forced to hand over control of the family to his son Sonny (James Caan). Inadvertently, Vito’s youngest son, Michael (Al Pacino), a former World War II marine who desires a normal life, finds himself taking part in the family business.

War soon commences between the Five Families, forcing Michael to seek sanctuary abroad. However, after the death of Sonny, Vito concedes defeat. Years later, Michael has returned to New York City and is fully integrated into the Corleone’s criminal activities. His dreams of a normal life are overridden by an unbreakable obligation to his family, and he takes on the responsibility of dealing with the other families.

Upon its debut, the first installment in The Godfather film series became the highest-grossing film of its time. Two more sequels were released in 1974 and 1990, respectively. These entries continue the story of Michael Corleone and explore the trials and tribulations involved with legitimizing his inherited criminal empire.
