Queen Bees And Wannabes

Based on a script by Tina Fey, Mean Girls (2004) is a comedy film that was helmed by director Mark Waters. The plot draws large amounts of inspiration from author Rosalind Wiseman’s Queen Bees And Wannabes (2002), a non-fiction book that explores the rich social dynamics between girls in high school.

Over the course of the film’s runtime, audiences follow Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), a 16-year-old girl who has recently returned to the United States after being home-schooled by her parents, Betsy (Ana Gasteyer) and Chip (Neil Flynn), during an extended work trip to Africa. She starts attending North Shore Highschool and finds it difficult to make new friends. Eventually, she meets Janis Ian (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian Leigh (Daniel Franzese), two outsiders who help her to understand the ecosystem of the school. This comes with a warning to avoid the so-called Plastics: Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), and Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert). A group of affluent girls, they are considered to be the most popular and mean.

Following an incident involving a sexist classmate, the Plastics invite Cady into their small circle. Janis, having fallen out with Regina previously, senses an opportunity and asks that Cady spy on the trio from the inside. Despite her initial reluctance, she later agrees to help when Regina kisses her crush, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett). However, this decision takes her down a dark path, one that changes her personality for the worse.

The franchise made its return with the 2011 straight-to-television film Mean Girls 2. This sequel introduces a new protagonist, Jo Mitchell (Meaghan Martin), as well as a fresh-faced group of Plastics, comprising Mandi Weatherly (Maiara Walsh), Hope Plotkin (Nicole Gale Anderson), and Chastity Meyer (Claire Holt).
