A Stanley Kubrick Classic

Released in 1971, A Clockwork Orange is a critically acclaimed crime filmed set in a dystopian world. The movie was directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Anthony Burgess’s novel of the same name, which was published in 1962.

The story follows Alex (portrayed by Malcolm McDowell), a Beethoven-loving punk who leads a gang of droogs (or thugs) and acts as narrator using a form of slang known as Nadsat. Throughout the course of the film, he is accompanied by Pete (Michael Tarn), Georgie (James Marcus), and Dim (Warren Clarke). Together, the gang embarks on a horrific crime spree, committing various acts of violence that are not for the faint of heart.

Eventually, Alex finds himself captured and is forced to take part in the Ludovico Technique, an experimental form of rehabilitation.

Upon release, A Clockwork Orange drew heavy criticism. Many reviewers responded negatively to its use of extreme violence, leading to a ban in many countries and the film being pulled from UK cinemas. Despite these setbacks, the movie has since been recognised as one of the great pieces of cinema and received countless awards.
