The Newest Member Of The Family
Created by Akihiro Yokoi (an employee of WiZ) and Aki Maita (an employee of Bandai) in 1996, the Tamagotchi — also known as the “Egg Watch” — is one of the best-selling toys in the world. It incorporates various features that are familiar to players of video games, each keychain-attached product allowing users to nurture a virtual pet.
After the toy is activated, players are greeted by an egg that eventually hatches and spawns a small creature. According to the narrative, said creature — which takes the form of an animal, person, or object — has been left on Earth by an alien race known as the Tamagotchis, their intention being to gain a greater understanding of life on our planet. It is the player’s responsibility to raise the creature, and their development reflects the extent of the care that it receives. The more attentive you are, the happier your pet will be.
To guide the health and behaviour of their pet, there are four meters that players must keep an eye on: Training, Discipline, Hunger, and Happy. The stats of these meters can be raised by feeding, playing mini-games, scolding, and potty training. If these activities are done correctly, this will cause the creature to evolve (the key stages being Baby, Child, Teenager, and Adult). However, failing to perform these responsibilities can result in your pet becoming sick, which can end with death.
