The Doomsday Clock Ticks

Created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, Watchmen is a mature comic series that was published monthly during the late ‘80s. The story centers around a world in which superheroes altered the course of history throughout the ‘40s and ‘60s, changing key events. America won the Vietnam war, and the infamous Watergate Scandal remains a closely guarded secret.

At the time of the narrative, the year is 1985. Costumed vigilantism has been outlawed, forcing the world’s most famous heroes to hang up their capes or pledge themselves to the service of the government. Meanwhile, the world moves closer and closer to annihilation as tensions rise between the US and the Soviet Union, both of which are ready to launch their full nuclear arsenal. To make things worse, the Comedian (Edward Blake), a state-employed superhero, is murdered by an unknown killer. This attracts the attention of Rorschach (Walter Kovacs), who never stopped his war against crime, and forces his former colleagues — Night Owl II (Daniel Dreiberg), Silk Spectre II (Laurie Juspeczyk), Doctor Manhattan (Dr. Jon Osterman), and Ozymandias (Adrian Veidt) — to involve themselves.

Following the massive success of the comics, the source material was adapted to film by director Zack Snyder. Watchmen (2009) faithfully recreated the story told by Moore, making only minor deviations.

In 2019, a TV show that functions as a spin-off from the previously explored material aired on HBO. Created by Damon Lindelof, the series introduced audiences to the world of Watchmen after the climactic events of the ‘80s comic. The modern-day plot focuses on the rise of the Seventh Kavalry in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Angela Abar/Sister Night (Regina King), a masked police detective, acts as the central protagonist during the debut season.
