Marvel’s First Family

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the Fantastic Four in 1961, introducing them to the world on the pages of their own self-titled comic series. The team comprises Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards (a genius with the ability to stretch his body), the Invisible Woman/Sue Storm (Reed’s wife, who can turn herself invisible and create force fields), the Human Torch/Johnny Storm (Sue’s brother, who can control the element of fire), and the Thing/Ben Grimm (a stone-covered monster with a heart of gold). Together, they form a close family and protect the public as a superhero team.

Throughout the history of their publication, the Fantastic Four have faced a number of villains: Doctor Doom, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, Ronan The Accuser, Annihilus, Namor The Sub-Mariner, and the Super Skrull — among others. Their ranks have also grown with the inclusion of Franklin (a powerful reality changer) and Valeria Richards (a child prodigy with an incredibly high intellect), the children of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman.

In addition to the comics, there have also been a number of live-action film adaptations. 20th Century Fox released The Fantastic Four (2005) — which starred Ioan Gruffudd (Mister Fantastic), Jessica Alba (the Invisible Woman), Chris Evans (the Human Torch), and Michael Chiklis (the Thing) — before developing a sequel, Rise Of The Silver Surfer (2007). The franchise was eventually rebooted with director Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four (2015), a new reimagining that featured Miles Teller (Mister Fantastic), Kate Mara (the Invisible Woman), Michael B. Jordan (the Human Torch), and Jamie Bell (the Thing).
