The Hunt For Kira
Created by Tsugumi Ohba (writer) and Takeshi Obata (illustrator), Death Note is a Japanese manga series that was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The popular manga ran from 2003 to 2006, totalling 108 chapters, and has been adapted for TV and film. A popular anime aired on Nippon Television toward the end of 2006, and Netflix released their live-action interpretation in 2017.
Set in Tokyo, Death Note centers around Light Yagami. A high-school student with a genius intellect, Light discovers a mysterious notebook that has the power to kill anybody whose name and face is known to the user. It is soon revealed that the Shinigami (a supernatural spirit) Ryuk purposefully dropped his notebook in the human world to see what would happen. Fortunately for him, Light doesn’t intend to disappoint, and he starts using his new power to eliminate criminals. Over time, his actions attract the attention of the media, who suspect that the deaths can be tied to one individual: Kira.
To put an end to Light’s chain of killings, Interpol recruits a consulting detective known as “L.” Despite his unusual personality, L’s intelligence is a match for Light’s, and he manages to narrow down Kira’s location by using various misdirects and deceptions. Eventually, a second Death Note is put into play by a Shinigami called Rem, who gives it to Misa Amane, a female actor and model. She makes a deal with Rem that allows her to kill anybody without knowing their name, a deal that costs half her lifespan.
