The Birth Of Darth Vader
After years of waiting, 2005 treated Star Wars fans to the final film in the prequel trilogy. Directed by George Lucas, Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith focuses on the last days of the Clone Wars, a conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy Of Independent Systems (otherwise known as the Separatists).
At the beginning of the film, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), two members of the Jedi Order, make a rescue attempt on Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), whom General Grievous (Matthew Wood) has captured. The pair manage to liberate the hostage and dispose of Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), but Grievous escapes.
Anakin soon returns to his wife, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), and she announces that they are going to have a child. The news is soured, however, when Anakin starts having dreams about Padmé dying in childbirth. During this period, Palpatine formally requests that Anakin be given a seat on the Jedi Council so that he can act as the Supreme Chancellor’s personal representative. The Council reluctantly accept — though they deny their latest member the rank of Master — and ask Anakin to spy on Palpatine, suspecting his motives. As Anakin spends more time with Palpatine, he realises that the seemingly harmless old man is the Sith Lord responsible for the war, having listened to his encouragement to embrace the dark side so as to save Padmé. Initially, Anakin remains loyal to the Jedi and reports his findings, but he changes allegiances after participating in the murder of Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson).
Pledging himself to a new master, Anakin is bestowed the title Darth Vader. He helps Darth Sidious carry out Order 66, a command that causes the clones to turn on the Jedi, and fights Obi-Wan over the volcanic falls of Mustafar, where he is almost fatally wounded. This confrontation forces Vader to wear a life-support suit, completing the fallen Jedi’s transformation.
