The Tree Of The Dead

Released in 1999, director Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow is a live-action horror film based on a story by Washington Irving: “The Legend Of The Sleepy Hollow.” The plot follows a late-18th-century New York City police constable called Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp), who is dispatched to investigate the hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, where a number of individuals — Peter Van Garret (Martin Landau), Dirk Van Garret, and Emily Winship — have been murdered by methods of decapitation. After speaking to the town elders, Ichabod discovers that locals are blaming the so-called Headless Horseman (Christopher Walken/Ray Park), an undead Hessian mercenary from the American Revolutionary War.

While conducting his investigation, Ichabod stays at the residence of Baltus Van Tassel (Michael Gambon), one of the elders; Baltus’s second wife, Lady Mary Van Tassel (Miranda Richardson); and his host’s daughter, Katrina (Christina Ricci). He later finds himself accompanied by Young Masbath (Marc Pickering), whose father becomes the fourth victim of the black-steed-riding murderer. Together, they uncover the Tree Of The Dead, where the Horseman is buried, and learn that his head has been stolen. Knowing this information, Ichabod concludes that someone in the hamlet is using the undead mercenary to perform their bidding, and he focuses his efforts on finding out who the puppet master is.

Like many films by Burton, the movie features a harrowing score that was written and produced by Danny Elfman, who also worked on Beetlejuice (1988) and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). Following Sleepy Hollow’s debut, his score won the Golden Satellite Award.
