Welcome To Tokyo

Created by writer Ryohgo Narita and illustrator Suzuhito Yasuda, Durarara!! began as a series of light novels (young-adult books that are targeted toward those in high school and middle school), its first entry having made its debut in 2004. ASCII Media Works, who published the books under its Dengeki Bunko imprint, released the 13th (and final) volume in 2014, and this was quickly followed by a sequel series: Durarara!! SH.

The plot of the original series explores the perspectives of eleven characters, each of whom lives in the Ikebukuro district in the Japanese city of Tokyo. One of these individuals is the young Mikado Ryūgamine, who moves to the district in order to attend Raira Academy. Upon his arrival, he reunites with an old friend, Masaomi Kida. The pair explore the streets, and Masaomi warns Mikado that there are certain people whom he should not cross: Shizuo Heiwajima (a man of extraordinary strength), Izaya Orihara (an information broker), and the Dollars (an enigmatic gang) — among others. Despite their caution, they catch a rare glimpse of the Black Rider, a helmet-wearing figure on a black motorbike that is said to neigh like a horse. Her real name Celty Sturluson, the Black Rider travels Ikebukuro as a courier of the underworld, hunting for her missing head.

Since the release of the light novels, there have been multiple adaptations. In 2009, illustrator Akiyo Satorigi translated the story to manga format, and it was serialized in Monthly GFantasy, a shōnen manga magazine owned by Square Enix. One year later, the Japanese animation studio Brain’s Base aired the first episode of their anime adaptation.
