A Never-Ending Dream

In 1959, Walt Disney Studios released an animated film based on author Charles Perrault’s most famous story, Sleeping Beauty. Following in the footsteps of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937), it was the 16th installment in their animation library.

The plot focuses on Princess Aurora (Mary Costa), the daughter of King Stefan (Taylor Holmes) and Queen Leah (Verna Felton). To mark her christening ceremony, the young princess is promised to the son of King Hubert (Bill Thompson), Prince Phillip (Bill Shirley), ensuring that their kingdoms will be forever united by familial ties. However, the occasion is tainted by the arrival of Maleficent (Eleanor Audley), who is the evil counterpart to the three good fairies: Merryweather (Barbara Luddy), Fauna (Barbara Jo Allen), and Flora (Verna Felton). Offended at being turned away, the self-titled “Mistress Of All Evil” summons a curse that ensures that Princess Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and perish before the end of her 16th birthday. Merryweather attempts to break the curse with the other good fairies, but she can only reduce its effects. Instead of dying, the young girl falls into a sleep that can only be broken by true love’s kiss.

Spinning out of the iconic story, a live-action film that centers on the villainous Maleficent was released in 2014. The story presents the infamous villain (played by actor Angelina Jolie) in a more sympathetic light as she is betrayed by her lover, a peasant boy called Stefan (Sharlto Copley). He severs her wings and presents them to King Henry (Kenneth Cranham), who promises the hand of his daughter (Elle Fanning) and the throne to the person who kills the protector of the Moors.
