In 1977, King released The Shining, his third published novel. It became a worldwide bestseller, cementing the author as a leading name in the horror genre, and the story soon found its way to the big screen. Director Stanley Kubrick — known for movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) — helmed the release of the adaptation, which made its debut in 1980.

The plot of the film, like its source material, focuses on Jack Torrance (played by actor Jack Nicholson), who accepts a caretaker position at the Overlook Hotel, situated in the Colorado Rockies. He allows his family — Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and Danny (Danny Lloyd) — to stay with him, dismissing warnings from Manager Stuart Ullman (Barry Nelson) that Charles Grady, the previous caretaker, took his own life and the lives of his family within the walls of the hotel.

As time passes, Jack’s mental health declines rapidly, his attempts to write his manuscript reduced to cyclical scribbles. Moreover, Danny starts experiencing supernatural premonitions, which are revealed to be the result of a telepathic ability dubbed “the shining.” This series of events ultimately leads to a deadly encounter between Jack and his loved ones.

Following in the footsteps of King’s critically acclaimed novel was Doctor Sleep (2013), which places Danny in the role of protagonist. Fully grown, he must contend with the True Knot, a group of psychically empowered individuals who use “steam” — an essence produced by dying possessors of the shining — to extend their lives.
