All Hail The King

Godzilla is a famous character in the kaiju genre (which centres around large monsters), having appeared in dozens of movies throughout the decades. He made his debut in a self-titled film that was released by the Japanese company Toho in 1952, a film that made the prehistoric sea monster a pop-culture icon. Originally, the concept was intended to shine a light on the destructive potential of the hydrogen bomb, which causes Godzilla to awaken and empowers him with radiation exposure.

In 2014, the character was rebooted for a new audience of filmgoers. Director Gareth Edwards presented his own interpretation of the established mythology, pitting the eponymous character against creatures that threaten the existence of humanity. In addition to the King himself, the movie also features a star cast of actors: David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe, and Elizabeth Olsen.

A direct sequel, King Of The Monsters (2019), expands upon the world and raises the stakes with the inclusion of new monsters: Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. As they fight for dominance on Earth’s urban battleground, humanity once again faces the reality that this could be the end.

The MonsterVerse welcomed a different type of giant to its roster in Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021), acting as a direct sequel to both King Of The Monsters and Kong: Skull Island (2017). The movie puts the two famous monsters on a collision path, a much-anticipated conflict driven by an unknown catalyst hidden in the Hollow Earth. In the end, only one can be named victorious.
