The Masters Of Pewter

Founded in 1885 by Yong Koon (a pewtersmith from the Chinese port of Shantou), Royal Selangor is a Malayasia-based company that specialises in the production of pewter. After his arrival, Koon established a small shop called Negeok Foh (Jade Peace), the progenitor of the brand, and began crafting ceremonial objects — including candle holders and incense burners — using the metal alloy. The arrival of British colonials encouraged Koon to expand his production, and it was around this time that the brand became Selangor Pewter, a name that would later evolve. By the ’70s, the company’s operation had expanded to overseas territories, reaching locations such as Singapore and Hong Kong. Interestingly, an endorsement by the Sultan Of Selangor inspired the replacement of ‘Pewter’ in the title, a change that also reflected the implementation of alternative materials.

Today, the legacy of Koon’s business is upheld by some of the world’s greatest designers, two of which are Erik Magnussen (a Danish silversmith) and Freeman Lau (a Chinese sculptor and artist). Their work can be seen in massive sporting events — one example being Formula 1 — as well as a variety of day-to-day products: music carousels, statues, busts, goblets, hip flasks, glasses, mugs, replicas, and more.
