Created through the joint effort of comic-book industry veterans, Iron Man / Tony Stark is an A-list hero in the Marvel Universe. He first appeared in Tales Of Suspense #39 (1963), wherein readers learn his origin of being a billionaire arms dealer abducted by a tyrant called Wong-Chu. The character, wounded by a landmine, is forced to build advanced weaponry for his captors, who are aware of his deteriorating physical condition, shrapnel gradually creeping towards Stark’s heart. Fortunately, the inventor’s mind allows him to build a chest plate capable of inhibiting the progress of the invasive shards, and he manages to escape in a suit of metal armour.

Free of his confinement, Stark makes the decision to use his latest design against those who mean harm to his company and the general public, misleading the press into believing that ‘Iron Man’ is a separate entity, his bodyguard. This new path lands him in the crosshairs of a great many villains, the likes of which include the Mandarin, Madame Masque, and Iron Monger. Similarly, his exploits solicit the attention of likeminded heroes, with whom he frequently joins forces to combat threats on a grander scale than he can handle alone. They are collectively known as the Avengers.

Beyond the pages of the comics, Iron Man — played by Robert Downey Jr. — is regarded as the character who launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), an interconnected series of blockbuster movies. He later joined the live-action interpretation of the Avengers, aligning with Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).
