A Hero’s Responsibility

Conceived from the minds of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Peter Parker — also known by his spandex-wearing alter ego, Spider-Man — is a Marvel superhero who made his debut in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962). Traditionally, the character is depicted as the orphan son of Richard and Mary Parker, who died in a plane crash. In their place, Aunt May and Uncle Ben assume parental roles; however, the latter of the two is killed by a criminal, and it is revealed that Peter willingly allowed this man to escape after committing an act of theft in front of him. This teaches the young Web-Slinger a valuable lesson: ‘With great power, there must also come great responsibility.’

With his superhuman powers, bestowed upon him by a radioactive-spider bite, the Wall Crawler protects the people of New York City from street thugs and supervillains, such as the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) and Doctor Octopus (Otto Octavius). Nevertheless, it is his civilian troubles that often hinder him, his aunt struggling to pay rent, his bullies taunting him at school. For this reason, Peter is recognised as a more relatable hero, a hero that shares in the trivial aspects of day-to-day life, and when he works with the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, or any other group of Marvel characters, he retains his individuality. He continues to be our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
