Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

In the comic books, the Avengers is a team of superheroes that comprises some of the most famous heroes in the Marvel Universe. The ensemble was first seen in the opening issue of their self-titled series, which was helmed by Stan Lee (writer) and Jack Kirby (artist). During this time, there were five founding members: Iron Man (Tony Stark), Thor, the Hulk (Bruce Banner), Ant-Man (Hank Pym), and the Wasp (Janet van Dyne). However, Captain America (Steve Rogers) joined not long after, being woken from his ice-induced sleep.

Nowadays, the team is widely recognised for appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), an expansive library of live-action films based on the comics. With many of the key players having received solo projects, several heroes — Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) — united in Avengers Assemble (2012) to combat the invasion of Loki Laufeyson (Tom Hiddleston), a fallen Asgardian prince who had made a deal with the galactic warlord Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Having become a huge success, the preliminary movie in the franchise was succeeded by multiple follow-ups, each of which introduced new members to the team, such as Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Though there is some disconnect between Installments, a plot thread that pervaded the Infinity Saga — the title given to the original 23 films in the MCU — was concluded in Infinity War (2018) and its immediate sequel, Endgame (2019).
