The Rise Of Castle

Francis “Frank” Castle — better known as the Punisher — made his comic-book debut on the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974), where he was depicted as an assassin and villain of the eponymous Wall Crawler. In modern storylines, the character assumes the role of anti-hero, focusing his attention of the criminal element of New York City. However, unlike most vigilantes in the Marvel Universe, he employs a decidedly lethal brand of justice, the miscreants who encounter him being gunned down without hesitation.

A former member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Frank started his path of violence after his wife and two children were killed by the mob for being witnesses to a crime in New York’s Central Park. Consumed by a mixture of grief and rage, he vowed to end the lives of those who participate in acts of criminality, and his first victims were the men responsible for his family’s death. Frank’s reputation as a cold-blooded killer is reinforced by the symbol upon his chest: a white skull.

In addition to his many appearances in comics, Frank has been adapted to other forms of media, the most notable of which are films and TV series. Notably, the character joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during the second season of Daredevil, a Netflix show in which he was portrayed by the actor Jon Bernthal.
