Journey Through Time And Space

The popular British television series Doctor Who has been a staple of the BBC since 1963, when actor William Hartnell first stepped into the TARDIS, a high-tech machine capable of traversing space and time. Predominantly, the narrative focuses on its eponymous character, who is a member of an advanced race of aliens known as the Time Lords. Alongside a companion — Susan Foreman (Carole Ann Ford), Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill), Ian Chesterton (William Russell), Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), and others — he/she travels to various exotic locations, encountering a myriad of species. However, some of these beings are less than accommodating, and the self-proclaimed doer of good is compelled to intervene. Over the course of several decades, he/she has repelled the likes of the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Weeping Angels, and the Sontarans — to name but a few villains.

According to the lore, Time Lords are biologically endowed with the ability to regenerate, which allows them to recover from fatal injuries. One of the main side effects of this healing is that they must also adopt a new physical form, and this caveat has allowed multiple actors to portray the Doctor, ensuring that the show can seamlessly continue in spite of recasting. Some of those who have stepped into the shoes of Britain’s favourite alien are Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker.
