Knowing Is Half The Battle

Created by Hasbro, G.I. Joe began as a series of toys and was the originator of the term “action figure,” a sales tactic used by the company to differentiate them from dolls (which were traditionally purchased for girls). The first product line was based on the different branches of the U.S. military: Action Sailor (U.S. Navy), Action Marine (U.S. Marine Corps), Action Pilot (U.S. Air Force), and Action Soldier (U.S. Army).

Over time, the concept of the franchises evolved. A narrative thread that provided backstory for the figures was conceived, introducing the conflict between the G.I. Joe forces and Cobra (a terrorist organization). A comic series and animated TV show were released in 1982 to coincide with the latest toy line: A Real American Hero (a relaunch that provided smaller figures).

In addition to the popular toys, there have been a number of film adaptations: The Rise Of Cobra (2009) and Retaliation (2013). The first film starred Channing Tatum (as Duke), whereas the sequel shifted the focus to Dwayne Johnson (as Roadblock).

In 2021, the G.I. Joe franchise graced theater screens once again with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Unlike its predecessors, this film put the spotlight solely on the eponymous character (played by Henry Golding). As the title implies, the film centers around the backstory of Snake Eyes, following his journey from a young man driven by vengeance to a black-clad ninja of few words.
