Choose Your Holiday

Directed by Henry Selick, The Nightmare Before Christmas is an animated movie that was envisioned by Tim Burton (the creative mind behind Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands). Touchstone Pictures released the film to theaters in 1993, introducing audiences to Jack Skellington (voiced by Chris Sarandon) and his fellow residents from Halloween Town.

The story focuses on Jack, also known as the “Pumpkin King”, as he and the residents of Halloween Town prepare for the annual Halloween celebrations. However, Jack has grown bored of the repetitiveness and is more than overjoyed when he finds doors in the woods that lead to various holiday-themed towns, one of which is Christmas Town. He quickly becomes obsessed with this new discovery, seeking to manage Christmas in the place of Santa (“Sandy Claws”). Sally (Catherine O'Hara), a female ragdoll created by Dr. Finkelstein (William Hickey), warns Jack about a terrible vision she has had regarding the outcome of his exploits, but he refuses to acknowledge her.

Danny Elfman, a famous American composer, lent his talents to the movie. He wrote the songs and used his vocal talents to voice Jack during the musical numbers, some which include “What’s This?”, “Making Christmas”, and “Kidnap The Sandy Claws”. In the year of its release, the score was nominated for a Golden Globe, demonstrating the influence this had on the film.
