The Merc With A Mouth

Deadpool, also known by the name of Wade Wilson, was conceived by the creative team of Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, his first appearance being in The New Mutants #98 (1991). Originally, the character was presented as an unambiguous villain; however, he later became an anti-hero figure, adopting a comical personality.

The so-called Merc With A Mouth — a moniker bestowed for his tendency to run his mouth — received his superhuman abilities, the most notable of which is his accelerated regeneration, after developing cancerous tumors. Offered the opportunity to take part in the Weapon X experiments, he was modified with the healing factor of Wolverine, another agent of the department. Alive but hideously deformed, he continued to engage in mercenary work and often fought alongside (and against) heroes of the Marvel Universe, such as Spider-Man.

In 2016, Wade made the leap to the silver screen for his self-titled movie, which marked the second live-action appearance of the character, the actor Ryan Reynolds having played the part in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). Despite Reynolds reprising the role, this new film reimagined Deadpool with a greater emphasis on comic accuracy, incorporating his unique ability to break the fourth wall. The storyline similarly recounted his established origins by acknowledging his battle with cancer and subsequent experimentation at the hands of Ajax (Ed Skrein).
