A One-Of-A-Kind Droid

R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), an R2-series astromech droid, made his first on-screen appearance in Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), the first instalment in the Star Wars film franchise. Alongside C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), he managed to flee from the Galactic Empire as they hunted for the stolen Death Star plans, which revealed a critical flaw in the space station’s architecture. The duo’s escape pod landed them on the desert planet Tatooine, where they were kidnapped by Jawas. Fortunately, their abductors sold them to a local moisture farmer called Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and he managed to introduce "Artoo" to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), whom the droid had a message for. After the Empire discovered their location, Artoo and his new companions departed the planet to help the Rebel Alliance. This placed the droid in the midst of the biggest moment in the galaxy’s history, and he continued to help throughout the entirety of the Star Wars original trilogy.

In addition to the first three films, R2-D2 featured prominently the prequels, which revealed the character’s origins in Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). He aided a younger Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and the Jedi Master’s young Padawan, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), during the Clone Wars and witnessed the fall of the Republic. He also had a smaller role in the sequel trilogy, providing critical help to the franchise’s newest heroes.
